In art Year 5 have been working with Miss Dixon, using embellishment to create their own paper. We are so impressed with their creations so far!

Today, Year 5 visited Sunderland University. We first took part in a ‘global ethnic majority’ session where we thought about discrimination and racism. We then went on a campus tour where we looked at what the university has to offer! Finally, we designed our own universities – thinking about where, what courses we wanted to offer and what they would be famous for!
Throughout this half term, Year 5 have been working on their composition skills in music. We have been learning all about staff notation, time signatures, ternary form, drones and grooves! Year 5’s end goal was to create a short ternary piece to accompany a motif, linked with our Spring topic, Sow, Grow, Farm. Our motif was Van Gough’s painting called ‘The Harvest.’
What a privilege it was for me to attend Hebburn Helps and see our gorgeous Sophia from Bede Burn and handsome Callum from St Oswald’s and their mams receive their MBE awards for their voluntary services to aid the community. Both Sophia and Callum for years have given up their school holidays to support at Hebburn Helps and ensure those who need support in the community are fed. Their work was also recognised during the pandemic. They are real courageous advocates and I am so so proud to be their headteacher! Thanks Callum and Sophia.
Love Mrs Smith

Yesterday in Design & Technology, Year 5 created three amazing soups. They researched seasonal ingredients and chose three recipes that included them: chicken noodle soup, carrot and parsnip soup and chicken soup. They practised their measuring, peeling, grating, chopping and cooking skills and ended up with absolutely delicious results!
During World Book Day, Y5 learned all about ‘The Oldest Student’ Mary Walker. We had many mature conversations about the protected characteristics age and race and determined that you can be a student at any age! We then wrote newspaper reports all about Mary Walker!

Today Year 5 had a great opportunity to talk to visitors from the NSPCC. Year 5 were incredibly mature whilst discussing different situations and learned important ways they can seek support.
