This week, Year 5 have been completing some sustained listening all about world music. Our world music genre was ‘South African Choral Music’. We listened to some gospel choirs singing and compared and contrasted their songs against British Pop Music.

Yesterday, Y5 had a fab trip to the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle. We initially took part in a workshop all about portraiture where we considered facial expressions and how they can tell a story in a piece of art. We then moved onto thinking about expressionism and created our own brilliant mixed media collages. After that, we went on a ‘gallery trail’ where we studied different pieces of art and considered their meanings/stories.
Yesterday morning, Year 5 took part in our final RE debate. Our big question this time was ‘is God’s plan set in stone?’ We discussed different ideas regarding our life’s paths such as: our Bible verse – Jeremiah 29:11, God’s plans, karma, hard work, luck and fate. Year 5 were brilliant throughout and respected everyone’s differing opinions!
Year 5 had a fab time at the Hancock Museum learning all about the Greeks, before half term. We began by completing a gallery explorer kit where we used the resources in the museum to support our research. We then listened to a Greek myth and worked together to match up mythological creatures to their descriptions. Finally, we took part in a ‘fighting forces’ workshop where we learned all about Hoplite soldiers and even managed to try on some Greek fighting equipment!
Year 5 have been looking at making collages with Miss Dixon as part of their art topic Mixed Media. We have looked at using different materials and resources to create our designs.
Year 5 have had a brilliant day today at the National Glass Centre. We started off with a workshop about properties of materials and changes – here we completed some mini experiments. Then we went to watch a glass blowing workshop – we loved this! Finally, we ended the day with some glass art. This needs to go into the furnace so watch this space for when our final products arrive…
Year 5 had a brilliant art lesson yesterday with Miss Dixon. We looked at using different materials to design and make our own collages, and started thinking about how we can use embellishment within our designs.
On Friday, Y5 had a lovely day with their friends at Bede Burn. We created a collage which links to our art topic – mixed media – and then spent some time together completing coronation themed puzzles!
