Yesterday, year 1 enjoyed a practical afternoon in DT as we continued our topic of chop, slice and mash. The children began by identifying a range of fruit and vegetables then discussing the different techniques that can be used such as chopping, slicing, mashing, tearing, peeling and grating. These techniques were then put into practice whilst focusing on the look of the fruit and vegetables, how they tasted and the texture.
In RHSE, Year 1 have been learning all about “Diverse Britain”, thinking about their community and how they can help it. On Friday, children thought about what the British Isles are and how this is different to Great Britain. Children then went on to use photographs to help them discuss what Great Britain is like, including what sort of houses, food and activities they might see or experience.
On Friday, Year 1 began a series of “Healthy Minds” workshops, lasting for three weeks. Children discussed different feelings and how these emotions might make their body feel. Children learnt all about different breathing techniques, designed to help them to feel calm when they are overwhelmed.
In PE this week, year 1 have focused on finding space and understanding how to change direction when attacking and defending.

For this week’s worship, year 1 thoroughly enjoyed toast Tuesday. This gave the children the opportunity to connect with others as part of our worship focus of mental health awareness.

On Friday, Year 1 celebrated Sir David Attenborough’s 100 birthday by reading the Little People, Big Dreams biography of his life. Children were fascinated by his upbringing and his fascination with animals. We then had a discussion about what character traits David Attenborough might have and why he is significant. We used our new found knowledge to complete a class quiz about him. Finally children watched his documentary “Kalahari”. Well done Year 1; we loved how interested you were!
