Year 1 started their new topic in PE today, striking and fielding. As part of our COOL task the children used a racquet and ball to practice their striking skills. We also focused on key vocabulary seen on the pic collage.

For this week’s Oracy challenge, year 1 were set the challenge of writing a postcard about a visit to London and to uplevel the words we use. The children completed the challenge doing a shared write and thought of many synonyms linked to their visit and landmarks.

For computing yesterday year 1 continued with grouping data. We began by grouping and counting objects then we did an object hunt looking for particular colours and then described these, even including our Oracy challenge for this week of thinking of synonyms.

WOW WOW WOW Year 1, what absolute little superstars. Your teachers could not be more proud of you all for our Bright Lights Big City assembly today. The progress you have all made since starting in year 1 in September is nothing short of amazing. We could burst with pride. Thank you so much to all our parents and carers for supporting your children in learning their lines, we are super grateful.

For this weeks worship challenge year 1 discussed how and when we should be passionate linked to how Jesus was. We then discussed our own passions in life and recorded these.
Year 1 have had a DT day today as part of their Taxi stem project linked to Bright Lights, Big City. First the children worked in groups to investigate a variety of moving vehicles, they then labelled pictures showing their understanding of the vocabulary such as axle and chassis. The children then became mechanics and designed their own London Taxi, they used their plan to begin building, working as a team to measure with a jig, cut dowel with a saw supported by a teacher, adding wheels and extra details. After lunch we tested our taxis on a ramp to see if they worked, we then evaluated our final designs.

For Oracy last week Mrs Smith and Mrs Sharrock set year 1 a challenge of describing an object using one word and building up a word bank. We linked this to our topic Bright Lights, Big City and looked at landmarks and features of London. The children also applied their phonics knowledge to spell the words.

What a super time Year 1 had for Character Day! Their focus was “strength” from our ethos and values. They explored the difference between mental strength and physical strength, with children completing challenges linked to both. They really focused in on resilience and how this can affect their mental and physical wellbeing and their achievements. Unfortunately our COOL afternoon in Jarrow was cancelled due to the weather, so instead children used their posters in the hall to cheer on their friends while completing a range of PE activities.

Year 1 had the BEST World Book Day! First of all, children read the story of “Paddington at the Palace” linked to their topic “Bright Lights, Big City”. Then they answered comprehension questions about the story. After, they took a virtual tour of Buckingham Palace and designed their own room for the King. In the afternoon, children watched a video of Paddington meeting the Queen and enjoyed afternoon tea, including marmalade sandwiches, jam and cream scones and Madeira cake. We even had a special guest, Queen Smith! A huge thank you to our amazing parents and carers for their unbelievable effort with costumes.
