Last week, as part of our Geography topic ‘Misty Mountain Windy River’ we looked at the different parts of a river. We thought about the different features of different courses, where the source of the river would be and the mouth of the river.
We then looked at erosion, transportation and deposition, creating our own human river to understand how this process worked. We then summarised all of our learning creating our own drawings to show this.
Today in PE, Year 4 continued with their gymnastics, focusing on rolls this week. We talked about the importance of warming our muscles up, and also focused on our cool down, or ‘body conditioning’ as our class gymnastics pro’s call it!
Following on from all we learned on our trip yesterday, Year 4 carried on looking at changing states of matter today with a chocolate experiment! We looked at how chocolate could change from a solid to a liquid when heat is applied. Obviously, the best part of our experiment was getting to lick the chocolate afterwards!
Well despite a last minute metro cancellation and an epic journey, Year 4 made it to the Glass Centre for their trip! Linked to their Science topic, we took part in a states of matter workshop, where we carried out experiments to investigate which materials were soluble and insoluble. We looked at which materials were solid and liquid, and how some materials showed properties of both.
As part of World Religion Day, we have been looking at Buddhism. Year 4 explored lots of items relating to Buddhism, followed by our own research into the story of the Buddha. We then completed some activities linked to this.
Last week, we had Rachel from The Dogs Trust visit St Oswald’s. Year 4 had a class workshop with Year 6 yesterday afternoon where Rachel spoke to us about safe ways to approach dogs and teaching us how to understand the signals they give us to help keep us safe. Thanks so much Rachel!
Year 4 went on their Spring term visit to the library. In line with our new topic ‘Misty Mountain Windy River’ the lovely library staff had sourced lots of fantastic books linked to our learning for us to take back to school. We listened to a story and then returned our library books before picking a new one.

Today in a Art, year 4 have been looking at exploring different techniques using fine line with soft pencils, ink and watercolours. We experimented by building up layers to make things appear closer and further away.
Yesterday, Year 4 had a fab afternoon exploring ‘States of Matter’ in their science topic. We first of all sorted different materials and objects into a Venn diagram to decide if they were solid or liquid…or if they were maybe a bit of both and take on both properties?
We then acted like particles in a solid, liquid and gas – being tightly compacted together or free to flow around like a gas!
Year 4 enjoyed their session on Monday, from Healthy Minds! We learned all about the 5 ways to well-being ☺️ some including being active and taking notice of the world around us. Once we had finished a discussion, we then completed some activities linked to showing love and getting to know one another more!
