Y5&6 absolutely LOVED their maths-based escape room experience delivered by Subject Revolution. They solved problems in teams to crack the codes and defeat the enemy. Thank you to Subject Revolution – such fun for our children at a price far cheaper than it would normally cost for an escape room experience!
Year 5 continued looking at properties of materials as part of their Science topic today in Forest School.
We talked about the difference between reversible and irreversible changes, and then carried out our own experiments, exploring the different indicators of chemical changes.
We investigated the effects of mixing bicarbonate of soda with vinegar, observing the gas it produced, the sulphur produced between raw and cooked eggs, the sounds effects of popping candy and the differences between fresh milk and sour milk!
Year 5 and 6 attended Monkton Stadium to compete in an athletics competition. The events were 75m sprint, 600m run, howler throw and standing long jump – the children showed off their skills and determination throughout the day!
Year 5 started their bikeability sessions this week, focussing on how to stay safe whilst using their bikes. The children are looking forward to getting out into the community to practice their skills!
Year 5 had a lovely afternoon in the nature garden for their a Forest School session this week. We have been looking at changing states as part of our current science topic, and spent the afternoon exploring solubility. We looked at a variety of different solvents, looking to see if they were soluble or insoluble, thinking about particle arrangement and saturation points.
Year 5 really enjoyed our rich experience to The Great North Museum Hancock. We explored the Ancient Greek gallery and attended a workshop on Spartan warriors where we even got to try on some Spartan armour and weapons! This links with our Groundbreaking Greeks topic.
Year 5 really enjoyed their rich experience at Newcastle Reform Synagogue. They learned about the Jewish faith including the difference between orthodox and reform branches of Judaism. Thank you to Mrs and Mr Scott for letting us explore their synagogue!
Year 5 started their area and perimeter unit by measuring the perimeter of items around the classroom!
Last week, Y5 built upon their musical knowledge by working in groups to create symphonies. The class had to create a composition, using a stimulus linked to their current topic ‘Sow, Grow, Farm’, whilst ensuring that they included all of the elements of the Y5 music curriculum AND having it structured in the ternary form. They performed their pieces at end of the lesson and blew Miss Topping’s socks off!
Y5 have had the BEST day at Low Barns Farm. We began by conducting an investigation into the soil around the farm and determining which was the best type. When doing this, we thought about the topography of the land and how it suited the pastoral farm.
After that, we looked at the animals on the farm and thought about how to separate soil. In the afternoon we were lucky enough to take part in some hill rolling and worm hunting!
A jam-packed day of countryside fun!
