On Friday, Y5 worked with Mrs O’Doherty all day to complete our new Art topic called “Nature’s Art”.
We thought about the difference between an earthwork and an art installation and how we could use natural materials to create sculptures.
Miss Topping and Mrs O’Doherty were blown away by our final pieces, watch our St. Oswald’s we might have some future sculptors on our hands!
Year 5 loved their half-termly library trip this morning. We listened to some stories from our lovely librarian and picked out our own books once again. We love this continuous rich experience and look forward to it every half term!
Today, Y5 were super lucky and had a doctor visit them! Miss Topping’s sister, Georgia, visited Y5 and provided her expert knowledge as a newly qualified doctor. We began by looking at the human gestation period and thinking about the development of an embryo, to a foetus, to a baby. We then asked Georgia some questions about life as a doctor. What a brilliant rich experience!
Y5 had a fantastic week bringing all of their learning to a head in the nature garden yesterday.
We prepared, cooked and taste-tested our seasonal soup! We had to use teamwork, numerical skills (thinking about quantities of produce) and oracy skills (discussions with peers) to create a Y5 meal!
Whilst waiting for the soup to cook, we imagine we were at a campfire and sat around and told some verbal stories. What a fabulous afternoon!
On Tuesday in Y5, we all went over to the nature garden with Mrs O’Doherty to begin our DT week all about ‘eating the seasons’.
We used our knowledge on seasonality and discussed what vegetables were currently in season and then began to practice cooking techniques such as: dicing, peeling, grating, sautéing and boiling.
Keep an eye out parents and careers as we’ve made some super seasonal soup today also – watch this space!
Last week, on Thursday morning, Y5 went to the Hatton Art Gallery in Newcastle where they took part in a gallery viewing looking at some examples of photorealistic art.
We then took our knowledge and applied it when creating our own art – inspired by constellations in the night sky. Y5 loved the curriculum links to their current Art topic ‘Line, Light and Shadows’ and their previous Science topic ‘Earth and Space.’
Now that we’re having a big push on our oracy skills in English, Miss Topping has been thinking about how she can sneak it into as many different lessons as possible!
In Geography we have been learning about WW2’s ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign where the UK government encouraged as many people as possible to grow their own food. Y5 were tasked with the challenge of researching the campaign and discussing whether it would be beneficial in 2024.

This week, year 5 flew through their Science and RHSE work so Miss Topping decided to promote reading for pleasure a little bit more! As a class we discussed the benefits of reading for pleasure and how this can be done both inside and outside of school. What better way to think about it than to get into a comfortable position with our favourite books!
Last week in Y5, we started our new Art topic – Line, Light & Shadow. We have been focusing on continuous line drawings, inspired by Pablo Picasso. The most important thing we have taken from our learning is that we don’t need our art to be perfect! Thinking about this has enabled us to create some amazing drawings!
Last week, Y5 took part in a brilliant workshop with Rachel from the Dog’s Trust. We learned about the different signals dogs display to show us their emotions and ran through a few scenarios. Thank you to Rachel from the Dog’s Trust!
