This afternoon, year 1 explored St Oswald’s very own art gallery! As part of our Rain and Sunrays topic the children discussed what weather symbols they could see on the artwork, what media had been used and what they liked.

Year 1 have started their new topic place value to 50. In maths the children played a game with their peers by rolling a dice and using tens frames and counters to race to 50!
Year 1 have had a fabulous afternoon in Forest School enhancing our Science learning. This half terms topic is Plant Parts and today we used our lovely nature garden to go on a plant hunt to identify a variety of common and wild flowers.
We have had so much fun and Mrs O’Doherty was blown away with our sticky knowledge and our use of scientific vocabulary too.
Year 1 have been making their own weather symbol collagraphs in art. They used their collagraphs to print with paint. We are super impressed with the end results

On Thursday, Year 1 explored capacity using practical resources. Children worked in groups to work out how many cups of water it would take to fill different jugs. We then began to work out how many cups of water it would take to fill multiple jugs by counting in twos and fives. Children enjoyed working practically and this really helped with their understanding of capacity.
On Friday afternoon, Year 1 began their new RE unit on Judaism. As part of their cool task, children were given different Jewish artefacts, which they had seen before in our unit on sacred places and asked if they could remember what the objects were and how they might be used by Jewish people. The children loved exploring the objects and they remembered lots of things about them.
After this, they looked at some new objects, such as a havdalah candle and a menorah. Children then wrote questions about the artefacts which we will hopefully answer in coming weeks!
Last week, year 1 completed STEM week linked to our topic Bright Lights Big City by making London taxis. The children thought about and explored ideas to begin, they then planned and designed before moving onto making their own taxis! Once the children had finished they then evaluated their designs and communicated with their friends around aspects of their finished product!
Great job year 1!
On Friday, Year 1 continued their unit on the good news Jesus brings. This week we thought about peace and times when Christians might need to talk to God to help them through tough times. Children recorded videos of themselves explaining times when people might not be feeling peaceful.
On Thursday, Year 1 continued their PE unit on striking and fielding. Children began by practicing throwing and catching skills before progressing on to knocking down wickets. This linked brilliantly to our cricket trip a couple of weeks ago!
This morning Year 1 continued their Music topic by composing their own song about London to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle. Children were brilliant at using their sticky knowledge to generate ideas and we tried so hard to mirror the rhythm of Twinkle, Twinkle. Miss Topping visited us and she was incredibly impressed by our work!
