Reception and KS1 had a visit from the school nurses this morning as part of World Oral Health Day. The children learnt the importance of brushing their teeth twice a day, foods we can eat to keep our teeth healthy and we enjoyed listening to a story about Dinosaur Douglas and the Beastly Bugs!
On Thursday, Year 1 explored the idea that music can be recorded by using symbols. We built on our prior knowledge of nursery rhymes and had a go at recording the rhythm of some familiar songs. First of all we tried clapping the rhythm, then we had a go at recording this using dots. It was quite tricky but we all gave it a very good go!
Year 1 had a fabulous time at Temple Park for the cricket festival on Friday morning! Children learnt lots of new cricket skills and had fun joining in with all of the different games set up. Well done Year 1!
Year 1 had so much fun playing the game “21” which Mr Richardson set for early work, as part of our celebration of International Day of Maths.
After this, children completed the NRICH problem “Coloured Squares”. Children were given six blank squares with a set of clues about which colour each square should be. Children had to work through the clues systematically, using practical squares to test out their ideas and make adjustments, before they coloured in their recording sheet. Children were asked to explain and justify their final answer using the language of reasoning.
The children really enjoyed a slightly different approach to maths last week; well done Year 1!
This week, Year One had a brilliant afternoon linking their science and art learning together. Mrs Wells was so impressed with how the children were able to use their sticky knowledge to identify the texture of different materials, relating them to their scientific properties.
“Best World Book Day ever!” was the verdict from Year 1!
The children focused on “The Three Little Pigs” and read two different versions of the story; the traditional tale and the “real” story according to the wolf! We role played being the pigs and the wolf and then wrote questions and hot-seated characters! Finally, in the afternoon we explored the properties of straw, sticks and bricks before building our own “wolf-proof” houses.
Year 1 have been using simple directional and positional language to give directions to locate landmarks in London! We have some great navigators!
Last week, Y1 had a superb afternoon in the nature garden, carrying out some scientific fieldwork. Children learnt all about temperature and used a thermometer to take the temperature both indoors and outdoors. Next children made their own rain gauges to measure rainfall, ready for a scientific investigation. Finally, Mrs B read a story around the campfire!
Year 1 started a new topic in Art today, Rain and Sunrays. The children focused on making transient art and pattern work using a range of human-made and natural materials to create weather symbols.
Year 1 started a new topic this morning in Maths, length and height. The children used concrete resources as a unit of measurement to measure objects within the classroom. Some of the children used their developing maths skills to estimate and compare lengths.
