Year 1 have had a fantastic day at The Hancock Museum learning all about animal classification – what a fab way to launch our new topic. We started off with a scavenger hunt where we had to find a number of different things around the museum. Then we learned all about the different ways that annals can be classified during our animal classification workshop. After that, Mrs Wells read a story all about the number of legs each animal has… hopefully we can get this book from the library!
This week, Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed a joint PE lesson, continuing their orienteering, which they started last week. Children worked in mixed Y1 and Y2 teams to read a map and find various markers around the school grounds.
Mrs B, Miss Randle and Mrs Wood were so impressed with the enthusiasm and motivation of the children and their resilience when they found it tricky to locate a marker. Well done Y1 and Y2!
Yesterday, Year 1 generated ideas for their friendship station as part of our Agents of Change actions. Children linked their ideas back to their RE learning and our ethos and values by remembering Jesus’ teaching of “be a friend to the friendless”. As you can see, lots of us would like a rainbow coloured bench – we will have to see what Mr Scrafton can do!
Year 1 participated in peer assessment for the first time today. After they had completed their multiplication and division work in Maths the children then marked their friends’s book, great job everyone!
Apologies for the HUGE number of pic collages, however our gorgeous Year 1 children had such a fabulous, rich experience at the Donnison School on Wednesday, that we had to share it all with you! As you can see, children loved handling Victorian artefacts and getting dressed up as Victorian school children.
This trip linked so well to our School Days topic and it was so beneficial for them to be immersed in a Victorian environment. The gorgeous weather also put a big smile on everyone’s faces at lunch time! Mrs B was even cartwheeling!
Yesterday for our Agents of Change work, Year 1 started designing positive affirmation signs to support our idea about having a friendship stop for those who are feeling lonely at school. Children generated some gorgeous ideas with lovely, kind words to make people feel better about themselves.
Yesterday Year 1 explored the parts of an IPad as part of their computing unit. Children practiced using the iPad to take photos, videos and slo-mos as well as turning the iPad on and off.
Yesterday Year 1 started their new PE unit on orienteering. Children were asked to follow a “map” of a face, in teams and use it to create a replica out of bean bags, hoops and cones. This was a totally new concept to the children; we look forward to seeing how they progress across the term!
Yesterday, year 1 continued their plant parts topic in science. The children used their observational skills to look at seeds and bulbs, and discussed the similarities and differences.
Year 1 started a new topic in art today, Street view. The children observed similarities and differences on google maps in the local area then used their excellent art skills to sketch buildings such as our school, houses and St Oswald’s church!
