Year 1 enjoyed their forest School session this week, exploring shelters as part of their DT learning. We explored the school grounds to see what shelters we could spot, and then we looked at lots of different materials used to build them, and sorted them according to their properties. We then tried to build our own shelters in the nature garden, thinking about their purpose.
This morning, for worship year 1 watched our schools BBC news documentary about saving our church. The children really engaged in this and discussed how passionate they are and that we want our voices to be heard!
This month is Black History month so year 1 have focusing on who is Martin Luther King and why he was significant. The children discussed how he influenced the world we live in today and what their own dream are.
For our worship challenge this morning year 1 looked at the four domains of spiritually and how they link to the tree of life. The children went outside and focused on nature and how we can use this to connect to others and God.
In science yesterday year 1 were tasked with identifying the property of different materials. They had to use their scientific knowledge to decide which side to run to or whether the material had both properties and to stay in the middle. This supported the children in working scientifically to complete a written task of a Venn diagram.
In Geography this afternoon, year 1 have been focusing on directional language and using this to move the teddy bear around the map.
Well, what a fab afternoon of Geography Year One have had today! They first of all identified features on a map and decided if they were physical or human. Next they worked together to create a big picture map using these features and a selection of different materials to show these. Finally they drew their own maps using a photo map of our school and the surrounding area.
Year One have been learning about how to construct sentences today. They identified who, what, where and when from given cards and then arranged them correctly looking for the capital letter to start and the full stop to end.
Year One have been super detectives this afternoon in Science. They identified and classified a variety of everyday objects according to the materials they were made out of. They even started to think about the materials properties ready for our learning next week.
On Friday, Year 1 enjoyed a practical maths lesson involving the “greater than”, “less than” and “equal to” signs. Children worked well in pairs, using the correct vocabulary and symbol to compare amounts. Amazing work Year 1!
