On Monday and Tuesday afternoon this week, year 1 have been investigating how the properties of materials define their uses.

On Friday, year 1 had a full art day covering the topic, Mix it! Firstly, the children completed a COOL task using their sticky knowledge from Reception. Secondly, they identified and used paints to represent primary and secondary colours on a colour wheel. To further develop the children’s understanding that colours can be mixed they used a folding and rolling technique to mix primary colours to create secondary colours. Finally, the children chose a template to create their own colour composition artwork.
This week, year 1 and two children from year 2 went into our local community and posted leaflets to help save our St Oswald’s church. We had a gorgeous time talking to local residents and making our voices heard. The children also posted leaflets promoting Mrs Whittle’s toddler group, please ask staff for more information about this!
In maths today, Year One have been adding together with the help of counters and part whole models. Using 2 different coloured really helped them understand ‘ adding more’ so that they could find the whole.
Today Year One have been preparing to write their riddles by learning about verbs. They children chose objects and then thought of different actions that you can do with that object. They then picked the best verb to write clues that could be part of their gold write riddles.
In music year 1 have been doing sustained listening to Rondo Alla Turca by Mozart. The children focused on dynamics and tempo and discussed what instruments they could hear. They then listened to the piece of music again and used musical tracing to follow along.
This afternoon, in PE year 1 continued with throwing and catching. We used bean bags to start with then because we have progressed so much we moved on to catching a tennis ball.
Year 1 enjoyed their forest School session this week, exploring shelters as part of their DT learning. We explored the school grounds to see what shelters we could spot, and then we looked at lots of different materials used to build them, and sorted them according to their properties. We then tried to build our own shelters in the nature garden, thinking about their purpose.
This morning, for worship year 1 watched our schools BBC news documentary about saving our church. The children really engaged in this and discussed how passionate they are and that we want our voices to be heard!
This month is Black History month so year 1 have focusing on who is Martin Luther King and why he was significant. The children discussed how he influenced the world we live in today and what their own dream are.
