On Friday, Year 1 listened to different instruments, paying special attention to their sounds and how they are played. Children then sorted instruments into categories such as blow, strike, shake and pluck. This forms part of our “Sustained Listening” unit in Music, which the children really seem to enjoy!
On Friday, Year 1 practised catching an object with precision and accuracy. First of all, children recapped on their skills learnt in Reception and then moved onto catching a bean bag while moving around and weaving in and out of others. Children were challenged to see if they could clap before they caught the beanbag, which they absolutely loved. Well done Year 1!
Yesterday morning, Year 1 and 2 worked together on our #saveourchurch campaign. As agents of change, we decided to create a petition on change.org discussing the issue with our church. In the weeks to come we will be asking our local community to sign our petition and support us in saving St. Oswald’s Church!
Yesterday was National Fitness Day and year 1 joined in completing a mile run of our school yard by running 9 laps. The children talked about the importance of warming up before and how our bodies and minds felt at the finish.
For this week’s worship challenge year 1 focused on how and why we should care for the world. The children discussed how they could look after their local environment and why it is so important to look after the world God created.
Year 1 have been practising the curly caterpillar family today for their handwriting lesson. The progress we have seen over 3 weeks has been amazing, keep up the super work year 1!
Year 1 enjoyed a trip to Jarrow library this morning. Catherine read us two story books and then we chose our own books to bring back to school to read for pleasure.
For Democracy Day year 1 focused on ‘why do we have rules?’. The children were given a game with no instructions or rules. This led to the children in having an in-depth conversation around why we have rules and instructions and how they guide and help us in everything we do.
In Science year 1 have been focusing on everyday materials. The children used their senses to explore objects made from a range of different materials and discussed their properties. They then looked at what are natural materials and human-made materials.
