Snow is falling all around us, children playing, having fun! Year 1 had the BEST time with their friends in reception.
In worship this morning, year 1 reflected on times of Hope and despair and how God can provide us with a pathway to light.
Year One have been learning about facts and opinions this morning, to support their non-chronological report work. The children had to listen to Mrs Wells read out a statement and they then had to run to the fact or opinion side of the classroom. To consolidate their understanding, they then continued to work practically and worked in pairs to sort different examples.
This afternoon, year 1 have been locating hot and cold places in the world in relation to the Equator. They then developed their atlas skills by looking at a map of the world and further identifying more countries.
In History year 1 has been focusing on what is a decade. Firstly, the children discussed the decades from the 1950’s to 2020’s and identified what significant events happened, then categorised these into the correct decades.
On Friday, in DT year 1 created a design of a shelter of their choice including a bus stop, pet shelter and garden centre. They used a design criteria to recognise what their shelter must have including being waterproof, protecting animals and being sturdy for example. The children then used a range of materials to build a prototype explaining their choices as they built!
On Friday, year 1 started their new topic of dance in PE. The children demonstrated their sticky knowledge of different types of dance and how we can move, then we put this into practice by moving to different types of music including Mozart and Katy Perry linked to our music topic.

Year 1 have had the best day at The Shipley Art Gallery to further their learning in the topic “Mix it”. Our workshop was based around exploring primary and secondary colours using oil pastels. To do this, a leader from the gallery discussed the local landmark The Angel of The North. The children created human structures, then in groups used their artistic skills to create a sculpture of the Angel of The North. Lastly, the children used primary colour oil pastels to create secondary colours to draw their own pictures. The leader commented on the children’s fantastic attitude to learning and how full of ideas they all were.
