On Thursday, Year 1 visited Newcastle city centre to see the features of a city, including the cathedral and universities. Children were fascinated to see Newcastle Castle and loved how old it looked. We then visited St. Nicholas’ Cathedral to explore how Jesus’ Gospel teachings might be seen in action. Reverend Jonny, our class champion visited with us and taught us how to offer peace or “pax” to others.

Children were moved to see people sheltering in the church who might otherwise have nowhere else to go. This was an important moment for us all!

In preparation for their phonics screening check, Year 1 have been practising reading real and nonsense words and sorting them into “Planet Real” and “Plant Nonsense”. The children had so much fun doing this!

Today Year 1 started their computing unit on moving a robot. Children had the opportunity to tinker with the beebots and explore how to use the buttons to move the beebot. Children were very excited to experiment!

Today Y1 completed their cool task for their PE unit, striking and fielding. Children practised how to hold a racquet in a handshake grip and then moved around the room balancing a beanbag on the racquet. Finally children practised flipping the beanbag and controlling it as it landed on the racquet.

Year 1 have been experimenting in science by making wind socks. The children used these to measure the wind and record a reading on the Beaufort scale.

Year 1 put their Design and Technology skills to the test today!

The children built a simple vehicle model, carefully attaching wheels to an axle and fixing them onto a chassis. They loved testing them out and watching them move along a ramp! Great job Year 1

Year 1 have started their new DT unit of Taxi! We investigated a range of everyday objects to see if we could locate and identify the axle, chassis and wheels. The children loved this activity and discussed how easy it was to find the parts of a vehicle.
