Year 5 and Year 1 teamed up last week, to participate in our prayer space day themed around our school values. We completed tasks together linked to trust, growth, strength, wisdom, trust and peace.
This morning, year 1 visited Jarrow library. The lovely Catherine read the children a story then they had time to read for pleasure and choose a book to bring back to school.

This morning, in maths year 1 have been demonstrating how they can double by adding the same number twice. The children used practical resources to support their learning and recorded number sentences on their whiteboards.
Today, year 1 visited the Laing Art Gallery. The children explored the gallery looking at different paintings to spot different types of weather linked to our art topic, rain and sunrays. We also looked at callagraph blocks and used our sticky knowledge to describe the texture and patterns. Finally, the children created their own callagraph blocks then used ink to create a print.
Today, as part of safer internet day, year 1 have been focusing on what is AI? We discussed different technologies that use AI and how they can help us. The children discussed AI they have in their houses. They then played a game where Mrs Wells asked Alexa different questions and the children used traffic light cards to decide if they were safe, unsafe or silly questions. Finally, they sorted different technologies to say whether they used AI or not.
Year 1 displayed their fantastic Oracy skills during time to talk day. The children read the story of ‘Mr Men and Little Miss in London’ and identified landmarks visited by the characters. Next, the children explored the types of transport used to travel around London and used a tube map and key to plot places of interest. Finally, the children used Mr Men character puppets to explain the route the characters took in the story. Thank you to our parents/carers for supporting our COOL afternoon, we could not do it without you!
Yesterday, in art year 1 looked at how they can compare different materials by exploring textures and how they can create and use a calligraph block.
Yesterday, year 1 went on a miles away Monday adventure to London, as part of their Bright Lights Big City topic.
Firstly, the children explored their sticky knowledge of human and physical features then looked at a map of London to look for the different features.
Next, they looked more closely at landmarks and their purposes, then testing their retention to match the pictures to their names and describing the purposes.
Finally, we put everything together we had learnt and wrote postcards telling our St Oswald’s teachers and friends all about what we had seen and discovered. We also chose a landmark to draw from memory and used this as the front of our postcard.
