Today, Year 1 have been learning all about the artist L.S. Lowry, as part of our work on “Movers and Shakers”. Children heard all about his life and work before completing a true or false activity in pairs. As an extension, children then wrote down their own true or false fact to test their friends’ knowledge. Finally, children worked in pairs to explore some of L.S. Lowry’s artwork, discussing what his paintings were about and identifying any key features.
On Thursday, Year 1 perfected their balancing skills in PE. First of all, children practiced making three key gymnastic shapes with their bodies: tuck, straight and star. Children then used these shapes to create controlled and still balances. Finally they were asked to perform two contrasting balances one after the other, holding each shape carefully.

On Thursday, Year 1 explored different types of lines as part of their “Rain and Sunrays” unit in Art. Children used different types of pencil to create different shapes and lines. Children were the asked to label each of their lines and shapes using new vocabulary, such as spiral, teardrop and wavy.
Year 1 looked at Sir David Attenborough as a Mover and Shaker. They found out facts about his life and why he was significant. The children watched a video of a documentary about a Sloth and recorded what this taught them. They also thought about chronology and time lined his life.
This afternoon Year 1 have started their new topic in Art, Rain and Sunrays. The children used a range of materials to make transient art and pattern work.
Year 1 started their new topic in PE this afternoon, Gymnastics. We watched videos of Olympic gymnasts then put our sticky knowledge to the test by demonstrating balancing, jumps and rolls.
Year 1 had a visit from NatWest Bank today as part of Money Sense. The children focused on what money is, what we can use money for and what is a business. Following on from this the children then had the opportunity to set up their own ‘Super Smoothie shop’. This involved identifying what they would need for their shop and counting money to see if they had enough to spend.
Year 1 have been using concrete resources to develop their understanding of numbers to 20. Yesterday, children looked at numbers 11, 12 and 13 in detail, using tens frames, rekenreks (abacuses) and base 10 rods.
Year 1 have had a great morning at the Urban Factory! We demonstrated the skills we have learnt in PE to join in with cheerleading style activities.
