Year 1 kick started their Bright Lights, Big City topic with a Miles away Monday to London. The children came to school dressed in the colours of the United Kingdom red, white and blue. We started the day by thinking about features of a settlement by looking at maps of London. Next the children looked more closely at the features, in particular landmarks. They then tested their sticky knowledge and matched images of landmarks to their names, also describing their purposes. Finally, as part of our Ozzie 80 we put what we had learnt today into practise and wrote postcards telling our St Oswald’s friends all about what we had seen and discovered.
Wowzers! Year 1 had an amazing start to their Bright Lights, Big City topic by learning all about the Great Fire of London. This morning, we learnt all about the main events of the fire and in the afternoon, we were incredibly lucky to do an online workshop with Alice from the National Archives in London. Children found out what the National Archives are and then they looked at different sources of information from 1666, to prove what they had learnt was factually correct. This was such an amazing rich experience!

Year 1 visited Jarrow Library this morning to return and change our books. Mrs Wells set the children a challenge of finding books linked to our new KRP topic ‘Bright lights, big city’, wow we were super impressed and love how passionate the children are about learning all about London!
On our way to the library, Year 1 focused on Geography fieldwork. The children looked at the local area identifying what type of settlement they live in. They spotted human and physical features, and decided that Jarrow is a town.

Year 1 enjoyed a lovely Christmas lunch yesterday. Lots of them enjoyed their roasties and turkey but were not so sure about the sprouts!
Yesterday Year 1 finished their digital art unit. First of all they learnt how to use shapes to create a collage in the style of Matisse. Then they completed their gold task by using all of their new skills to create a Christmas scene!
Year 1 and 2 have been busy this week performing our Nativity twice called ‘A Miracle in Town’! We have LOVED performing this to you all and were superstar singers!
Year One had a fabulous afternoon at their Christmas party. They danced, played games and ate lots of party food! Mrs Wells and Mrs Hope were so impressed with their behaviour and attitudes towards each other. They were definitely in the Christmas spirit!
