Year 1 have been practising their gymnastics this afternoon. We focused on different rolls and our posture to support a straight jump and landing.

Wowzers trousers! Year 1 have amazed staff with their map reading and oracy skills during Time to Talk Day. Children read the story of “Mr Men Little Miss in London” and identified the landmarks visited by the characters. Next, children explored the types of transport used to travel around the city and used a tube map and key to plot places of interest. Finally, children then used Mr Men character puppets to explain the route the characters took in the story. Thank you to our fantastic parents and carers for supporting our COOL afternoon – we could not do it without you!

For worship Year 1 have been focusing on Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme this year is ‘know yourself, grow yourself’. The children discussed what mental health is and the different ways it can impact our lives. They then completed a task exploring and embracing self-awareness on how we feel and our well-being.

Year 1 have been putting into practice what they have learned in place value to 20 by ordering numbers to 20 from greatest to smallest and smallest to greatest. We used number lines as a support and to focus on our number formation. Great work!

Year 1 have been programming Beebots this afternoon. Firstly, we discussed what is a Beebot and how does it move, focusing on the children’s sticky knowledge from Reception. The children then used the buttons to programme the Beebot, using key vocabulary to communicate the commands to others. Finally, the children worked in pairs as robots giving each other instructions to follow.

Today in Music Year 1 started their work in compositional skills. We focused on pulse and beat and carried out many fun activities linked to this. First we listened to Twinkle Twinkle little star and the grand old Duke of York, Mrs Wells gave us the task of clapping along to the steady beat. Next we discussed how our bodies can also be used as instruments. We investigated different ways to use body persuasion to follow a repeated pattern. To finish off we thought about pulse and explored different ways we can move to the music.

Year 1 have been focusing on comparing numbers to 20 in Maths. The children focused on more than and less than in their books recognising the correct symbol to use then they played a game working alongside another child putting their learning into practice.

In year 1 we continued our work in Seasonal Changes in animals. For the first part of the afternoon we looked at a grey squirrel and how they have to adapt during the four seasons. We then looked at the weather, the children went outside and observed today’s weather and wrote a report using key vocabulary.

In RE today Year 1 have been focusing on why Jesus chose Matthew as his follower. The children had an in-depth discussion around this then applied this to their work in answering questions around why people did not like Matthew and Jesus’ teachings about how you should treat others.
