This afternoon in Geography Year 1 have been using simple directional and positional language to give directions around London and different landmarks.

This morning year 1 have been revising doubles in Maths. We then applied this in our learning to help us work out near doubles.
Year 1 visited Jarrow Library this morning to return and change our books. The lovely Catherine read the children stories and we shared our love for reading by exploring the library with our friends.
On Thursday morning, Year 1 did a cross curricular Music and English lesson. Children were all given percussion instruments and were asked to use these instruments to enhance storytelling of Jack and the Beanstalk. We discussed pitch and how using progressively higher notes on the glockenspiel could represent Jack climbing higher up the beanstalk and lower notes for him climbing down. Children were asked to use their own notation to remind themselves of how many times they would beat / shake their instrument.

Today, Year 1 read the parable of The Unforgiving Servant. We discussed the meaning of the story and role played this. We even had someone in role as Jesus and children “hot seated” him by asking him questions around the the teachings in the story. Children were brilliant at discussing forgiveness and why that is important to all people, not just Christians.
For this week’s worship Year 1 have been thinking outside of the box linked to how Jesus was innovative.

Year 1 finished their computing unit on programming yesterday . The children planned a simple program using what they have learnt so far then for their gold task they explored how they can use different routes to get to the same place.

Year One have had a brilliant day at The Laing Art Gallery, completing their gold task artwork linked to Rain and Sun-rays. They took part in a printing workshop where they made their own printing block out of styrofoam and they carefully carved weather patterns which they then printed with using ink.

On Friday, Year 1 explored pitch as part of their compositional skills work in music. First of all, children listened to notes played on a glockenspiel and indicated if they thought the note was a high note or a low note by placing their hands on their head (high) and hands on their knees (low). We also discussed the difference between pitch and volume. Next children played the do-re-mi game to develop their understanding of changes in pitch.
