Y1 – Art – Printing Materials – 8.5.19

Today in Art Year One have been experimenting with different printing materials. We used sponges, bubble wrap, cubes and then even thought of our own to use our hands and fingers! It was great seeing all of the different printing effects due to different surfaces. We evaluated which we thought was the best material to print with.

Y1 – Science – Planting Seeds – 30.4.19

This afternoon in Science we have been thinking about what a plant needs to grow and then planting our own seeds. Some of us have planted sunflowers and we are going to watch and observe closely how they grow and develop over the next few weeks. We will have to check them each day to see if they need water and if they are getting enough/too much sunlight. Some of us have planted cress instead and we have decided to look a little bit more closely at the conditions a plant can grow in. We have placed our plants in four different places, outside, on the window in the classroom, in the cupboard and behind the door to see if it makes a difference to the growth of the cress. These children will be keeping a diary to track their experiment and see if and how well they grow!

Y1 – Lahna’s Easter Adventures – 22.4.19

Hope everyone has had a great Easter.

Lahna and her brother Luke – who will be staring school in September – went to the Isle of Arran. They love all the animals they see there – they stayed on a dairy farm, fed and cuddled newborn lambs, fed donkeys, went horse riding on the beach and came face to face with wild deer. They loved making their own soap too.

Y1 – Computing – Authors, Illustrators, Animators – 22.3.19

On Friday,  Year 1 welcomed Mrs Smith into their classroom whilst they were creating their own e-books using Purple Mash. This term the children have been investigating different types of book, including electronic books during Computing. Today’s task was to create their own e-book using, animations, sound effects and backgrounds. We were blown away with the results and we can’t wait to share them for others to enjoy!

Y1 – History – Visit the Railway Museum in York – 12.2.18

Children in Year One took their learning on an adventure to the National Railway Museum in York, travelling by Metro and then a mainline train just to get there! After exploring the Great Hall which houses the Mallard and the Bullet train, they took part in a workshop about George Stephenson. There was time travel, dressing up and sounds effects involved as they re-enacted the Rainhill Trials.

Mr McGrath took Year 1 on a virtual, musical adventure to York train station this week. The children used their superb listening skills to identify all the different sounds from this bustling train station. Next they combined the different sounds and composed their own version. It was as if we were really there!

 

Y1 – Enjoy the Winter Weather – 1.2.19

Year 1 made the most of the winter conditions on Friday and played in snow. There were miniature snowmen, snow mountains, giant snowballs and beautiful patterns made in the snow. Some children spotted some tiny bird footprints and some noticed that our rain gauge was completely frozen.

Y1 – History – A Mystery Suitcase Appears – 25.1.19

So firstly, Year 1 discovered a mystery suitcase in the lost property of their class railway station. Next, they discovered from a luggage tag that revealed it actually belonged to someone called George Stephenson. We did not know much about him until we investigated the sources of information inside the case. Just look at how much we know now ….. wow!
