Today, Year 4 visited Jarrow library again. We returned the books we had borrowed last half term, and chose a new book to take back to school to enjoy.
We loved listening to stories read by the library staff, spotting our favourite authors and exploring new books we hadn’t seen before. The library is certainly a big hit with our fantastic Year 4 bookworms!
As part of our Invasion topic, Year 4 have been looking at monasteries and their purpose in Anglo Saxon times.
Lots of the class were amazed to find out that we had the remains of a very famous Anglo Saxon monastery right here on our doorstep…so we decided to take a visit to check it out for ourselves!
We used a map of the original layout to identify where the refectory, hall, dormitories and workshop would’ve been, and even found the old burial ground used for the monks.
We were amazed to discover that part of the church building was actually built in Anglo Saxon times and remains there today. We can’t wait for our trip to Jarrow Hall to learn more about Anglo Saxon times.
As part of our Science topic, The Digestive System, we have been looking at teeth. We have looked at the different types of teeth, what those teeth are used for, and the importance of fluoride.
We were lucky enough this afternoon to have a video call with a dentist, who answered all of our questions on teeth and showed us all of the tools she uses in her surgery. Year 4 were super keen to share their learning with her!
Year 4 were very lucky to have a visitor in class today. A member of the RNLI came to talk to us about how to stay safe in the water and to highlight the dangers you can encounter. They also talked to us about what to what do to in case of an emergency.
Year 4 have absolutely loved their first half term of swimming. Their swimming instructor is so impressed with their progress so far! Today the children enjoyed some free time in the water and had a super time!
This morning Year 4 have looked at Diwali festival linked to Sikhism! We have looked at how it is the Festival of Lights and what that means to Sikhs. We have learned all about how it relates to their beliefs and also spent some time creating our own ‘Rangoli’ patterns 
On Friday, as part of Show Racism the Red Card day, year 4 looked at how we can be agents of change. We looked at various scenarios involving racism, and spoke about what we could do in that situation to advocate change. We discussed the importance of speaking out for what we believe in.

Year 4 have been looking at writing speech as part of English. Today, we devised our own character dialogues, thinking about punctuating our speech correctly. We read them out to the rest of the class and our performances were fantastic, using SO much expression, which made Miss Marley and Mrs O’Doherty’s morning! Well done Year 4!
For World Mental Health Day last week, Year 4 took part in some yoga activities, and talked about the benefits that exercises like yoga have on our mental health. We also looked at the importance of positive messages and thoughts on not only our own mental health, but on those around us too.
Today in Year 4 we completed our session around ‘Global Hand Washing Day’. We first inspected our hands and rated them out of 10 with how clean we thought they were, we then watched how to wash them properly and practiced this! We also created some top tips in soap bubbles!
