Today in Year One we have been learning about World Diabetes Day. The children read and discussed ‘ Super Sammy’ a story about a little boy with type one diabetes.

We then had some visitors come in from T1 Kidz, the children listened to another story about diabetes, and then completed a task where they had to colour in their own invisible capes. Finally, we had a role-play activity where children helped their teddies inject their insulin.

Year 1 have been loving their maths and have taken part in a practical challenge for Maths Week. They worked on developing their problem solving skills and resilience, trying to find different combinations and not giving up! Amazing work and super us of vocabulary too.

Yesterday, Year 1 visited the Centre for Life in Newcastle, as a rich experience linked to their Geography work. Wow! What a blast we had!

First of all, the children benefited from an interactive workshop on maps, continents and seas. We were incredibly proud of their knowledge and participation. Next we explored the space centre and the planetarium.

This was such as exciting experience for the children and a brilliant introduction to constellations. Children also had the chance to touch a real piece of moon rock which they thought was very cool.

In the afternoon, we watched a hands-on science show and visited the other areas of the centre. Lots of children said this was the best trip they’d ever been on!

Well done Y1 – you blew our socks off, as always!

Year 1 had the most amazing trip to Hebburn Library, last week! We were introduced to the library staff who discussed fiction and non-fiction books with us before reading a story. We were issued with a class library card and every child chose a book to take back to school which will stay in their tray to support reading for pleasure.

Children LOVED exploring the books on offer, with some children even selecting non-fiction books to follow personal interests. The children were so engaged and behaved superbly. The library staff even commented on how wonderful their behaviour was and said they can’t wait for us to go back!

Huge well done to our gorgeous Year 1 children – we were so impressed! Children will be sent home with a form so they can join the library and borrow books themselves, if they haven’t already done so.

This morning year one had a special visitor from the RNLI. The children learnt about staying safe in unfamiliar situations/environments, knowing the dangers in the water and the best ways to get help in an emergency.

In year one the children have been learning how to use a Venn diagram. They have sorted everyday materials into property categories, recognising if a material has more than one property. Great work 

Year 1 got to learn all about the importance of hand washing yesterday when they celebrated Global Handwashing Day. They took part in an experiment, read a story and even learnt a song too! Great job Year everyone!

Year 1 have loved starting their new Geography topic “Our Wonderful World” and are really getting to grips with new key concepts and vocabulary. Last Thursday (5.10.23) we learnt all about physical and human geographical features. Children loved sorting features using picture cards and some moved on to using a Venn diagram to compare a village and a city. The children were brilliant at spotting these features when we were out and about on our trip on Friday. Great stuff Y1!

Wow Year One had the best trip to Sunderland Winter Gardens on Friday. The children took part in a toys past and present workshop, where they investigated the similarities and differences between old and new toys. On the afternoon we explored the museum and visited the exhibition of Elmer and friends. We had such a good day we wanted to share all our photos!
