It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in year one! How amazing does our Christmas tree look? We’re all super excited to begin Christmas celebrations in school, we have so much planned to look forward too!

Ahead of our Christingle Church service, year one have been making their own Christingles, we learnt what each part of the Christingle represents. The children demonstrated excellent sticky knowledge and were very keen to share this with Mrs Smith.
This morning Y1 took part in a super Agents of Change prayer space. We completed activities linked to issues we are passionate about changing in our community and the wider world. We explored issues such as homelessness, racism, animal welfare, bullying, recycling and cancer. Children loved the hands-on nature of the activities and were all so engaged. Well done Y1!
Y1 enjoyed a fantastic road safety workshop today! We learnt how to cross the road safely using the green man at traffic lights or the school crossing patrol. We practised looking left and right, listening for cars and holding a grown up’s hand. Children received a road safety leaflet and a reflective tag to go on their coat zipper to help keep them safe.
Year 1 children are loving their PE unit which is dance! We have been looking at music and dance from different decades. Last Friday (17.11.23), we looked at music from the 1980s and practised moonwalking and the running man. We finished off doing the Locomotion by Kylie Minogue.
This unit links well to our topic work on Childhood and it has reinforced key vocabulary such as the word decades.
On Friday, Year 1 had a brilliant day celebrating Children in Need in support of South Tyneside Young Carers.
We learnt all about what a young carer is and how they support their family members. We then had a lovely visit from South Tyneside Young Carers who told us all about how they provide help to those in need. The children enjoyed role-playing caring for others and completed some lovely writing about this.
Later on, Year 1 enjoyed an awesome COOL afternoon with our lovely parents and carers! We loved making Pudsey masks and love hearts explaining the qualities of a young carer. Last of all, we listened to a story all about Pudsey and his fundraising.
Thank you to our parents and carers for an amazing turn out. We couldn’t do it without you!
Today in Year One we have been learning about World Diabetes Day. The children read and discussed ‘ Super Sammy’ a story about a little boy with type one diabetes.
We then had some visitors come in from T1 Kidz, the children listened to another story about diabetes, and then completed a task where they had to colour in their own invisible capes. Finally, we had a role-play activity where children helped their teddies inject their insulin.
Year 1 have been loving their maths and have taken part in a practical challenge for Maths Week. They worked on developing their problem solving skills and resilience, trying to find different combinations and not giving up! Amazing work and super us of vocabulary too.
Yesterday, Year 1 visited the Centre for Life in Newcastle, as a rich experience linked to their Geography work. Wow! What a blast we had!
First of all, the children benefited from an interactive workshop on maps, continents and seas. We were incredibly proud of their knowledge and participation. Next we explored the space centre and the planetarium.
This was such as exciting experience for the children and a brilliant introduction to constellations. Children also had the chance to touch a real piece of moon rock which they thought was very cool.
In the afternoon, we watched a hands-on science show and visited the other areas of the centre. Lots of children said this was the best trip they’d ever been on!
Well done Y1 – you blew our socks off, as always!
Year 1 had the most amazing trip to Hebburn Library, last week! We were introduced to the library staff who discussed fiction and non-fiction books with us before reading a story. We were issued with a class library card and every child chose a book to take back to school which will stay in their tray to support reading for pleasure.
Children LOVED exploring the books on offer, with some children even selecting non-fiction books to follow personal interests. The children were so engaged and behaved superbly. The library staff even commented on how wonderful their behaviour was and said they can’t wait for us to go back!
Huge well done to our gorgeous Year 1 children – we were so impressed! Children will be sent home with a form so they can join the library and borrow books themselves, if they haven’t already done so.
