Year 1 love a Friday practical Maths session! Mrs Booth asked children to find all the different possible ways that they could put the spots back on the toadstools after the wind had blown them away.

Children were given eight counters and they had to use these counters to find all of the possible combinations of spots. They used whiteboards to record their combinations in number sentences and were asked to work systematically. They worked in pairs to support each other and used team work to solve the problem.

In PE today Year One have been practising balancing and placing a bean bag on their friend’s head, throwing and catching underarm and working as a team to pass the beanbag around a circle. Staff have noticed such a big difference, well done!

Yesterday, in RE, Year 1 thought about the different ways that Christians might show their love for God. We freeze-framed how Christians might demonstrate their love by their actions. We linked this back to the story of The Lost Son and discussed how Christians see God as a father figure.

In Maths, Year 1 were introduced to the concept of parts and a whole.

Children were given six bean bags to throw into a hoop. Children then had to count how many bean bags landed inside of the hoop and how many landed outside of the hoop; these represented the parts. Children then counted how many bean bags they had altogether and this number was the whole.

This learning will feed into work on Monday around part-whole models. The children loved this practical lesson and grasped the concept so well!

In PE, on Friday, Year 1 have been focusing on catching. The children practised catching themselves, then added a challenge by clapping and moving around the room. We then practised throwing to our friends and using the throwing skills we have learnt so far in our balls skills topic.

This afternoon Year 1 have continued their learning in Science by identifying and classifying materials. The children explored objects and grouped them into categories and discussed the materials properties.

Year 1 enjoyed a visit to Jarrow Library this morning. Catherine the librarian read the children a story and then we explored the library independently showing our love for books and reading.

Today, Year 1 visited the church with Father David. The children prepared some very deep questions, ready for Father David to answer about God and his character. They got to explore different parts of the church, including the font. Children were well behaved and respectful throughout. Well done Year 1!

This morning Year 1 have been problem solving in Maths. The children used dominoes to recognise patterns and sequences then applied this in their learning.  Mathematicians in the making.
