Year 1 had a brilliant time completing their DT unit, “Shade and Shelter” with Mrs O’Doherty in forest school.
Having made an earlier prototype, children were asked to work in teams to build a stable, waterproof den. After children had completed their Gold task, they were given time to explore the nature garden and feed the chickens and ducks!
This week is Anti- Bullying Week and Year One have been delving into the theme of ‘Choose Respect’. We thought about what the word respect meant means, how we show it and why we should respect everyone, even people we don’t know. We created acrostic poems as part of our English work, to help us remember some of the key steps to being respectful.
Today, as part of World Diabetes Day Year 1 had a visit from Diabetic Nurses. The children thought of questions they would like to ask and we leant all about what diabetes is.
Following on from Mrs Smith and Mrs Sharrock’s oracy assembly we focused on word association. The children used this to test their sticky knowledge from, what they had learnt.
This afternoon Year 1 started their new unit in PE, dance. This half term Y1 will be learning cheerleading with Mrs Urwin. This afternoon we talked about what dancing is and copied some dance moves. We then had a tinker with the pom poms and started counting in 8s and practising some steps.
Yesterday, Year 1 had the BEST day at The Centre for Life. As part of our Geography topic ‘Our Wonderful World’ we participated in a workshop that focused on the continents of the world, animal habitats and landmarks.
We then explored the play zone, the space centre and the creativity zone. We’re so proud of the children. Their knowledge blew away staff and their behaviour was impeccable as always.
Year 1 visited Jarrow Library this morning to change their books and choose some new.
Whilst we visited the children focused on their Oracy skills following on from Mrs Smith and Mrs Sharrock’s assembly.
We learnt that to show good listening and speaking we need knees and eyes together. The children demonstrated this by talking with their friend about the book they had chosen, and asked each other questions.
