Whole School – Self Isolation – TT Rock Stars Weekly Results – 1.5.2020

1st May 2020H Smith

Oh how the (times) tables have turned this week! On Times Tables Rockstars last week, each of younger year groups won their battles, but this week it’s the turn of each older year group to be victorious (see screenshot of results)! Special mention to Y3 though, who were the second highest scorers in the whole school and therefore would have beaten Y5 or Y6 had they been battling against them!

The top three individuals from each class (in order from 1st to 3rd) are as follows:
Y1: Daniel, Simon, Anna
Y2: Joshua, Paige, Ivy
Y3: Leon, Charlie, Rowan
Y4: Charley, Aaron, Erin O
Y5: Charlie, Naomi, Alfie
Y6: Alex, Jak, Jacob B
Certificates will be sent to parents of these children by email on Monday.
Well done again, St Oswald’s!

Whole School – Self Isolation – World Jazz Day – 30.4.2020

30th April 2020H Smith

World Jazz Day

If you are not sure about what Jazz is, here are a few of the most famous songs that you have probably heard but didn’t realise were Jazz. What do you think?

  1. Louise Armstrong – Wonderful World – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8so-xyKyJ-A
  2. Nina Simone – My baby just cares for me – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYSbUOoq4Vg
  3. Cab Calloway – Minnie the Moocher – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mq4UT4VnbE
  4. Dave Brubeck – Take Five – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHdU5sHigYQ
  5. The Glenn Miller Orchestra – In the Mood – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vOUYry_5Nw

Jazz is a music form that is very daring in the way it uses musical themes like melody, dynamics, rhythm, timbre, texture and structure.

Here are a few ideas to help you explore Jazz:

  1. How would you describe these songs?
  2. How would you dance or move to them?
  3. There is a particular singing style to many jazz songs… How would you sing along?…
  4. Watch the clip for In the Mood by the Glen Miller Orchestra:
    1. What do you think about the way the people are dancing?
    2. The song has a very catchy ‘swinging’ feel to it this is based within the pulse and the rhythm. Can you identify these and tap them out?
    3. In the middle of the song, a lot of the instruments stop playing and the sound goes quieter which musical theme(s) can we identify here?
    4. How many different instruments can you identify? – Which of these instruments can you hear across the other pieces of music?

Go to https://jazzday.com/ and do some research into Jazz:

  1. Look at the all the events on the home page. They are being held all over the world. Can you find the different countries and cities on a map?
  2. Each year, a different global city is selected to host International Jazz Day. Cape Town, South Africais the 2020 Global Host City. Research the country and the city and prepare a presentation for the Jazz event which explains more about where it is being held. What is South Africa famous for? Where is it? Who are its famous historical figures?

  1. Design a CD album cover inspired by some of the music above. If this was YOUR CD, how would it look?

Whole School – Self Isolation – In School – 28.4.2020

29th April 2020H Smith
Today in school we used some of Mr Richardson’s terrific treehouse tutorials to support our work with multiplication and addition. After break we used our weekly theme of Koinonia in action to reach out to some veterans who are stuck in their care-home and are feeling lonely and isolated. We wrote them letters telling them about our experiences of the lock-down and asking them some questions about their lives.
In the afternoon we did some work with Mrs Hope to audit favourite school meals then finished with a look at how to use pulse, rhythm and melody to start to construct a song.

Whole School – Self Isolation – Miss Dixon is thinking about Koinonia – 27.4.2020

27th April 2020H Smith
Thank you for your facebook Collective Worship. The first thing I did to ‘come together’ this week was join Facebook. I’m loving reading all the previous posts and catching up with the fabulous posts of our friends and family of St. Oswald’s.

My neighbour, who is a seamstress, is making a difference in society by making PPE for our local key workers. As a family we have helped raise money for our neighbour this week by running. Everyday, my family have ran around the street and put 20p in the pot for every lap. I’m not sure how much we’ve raised so far but once the pot is full I will donate the money on my neighbours Go Fund me Page so she can continue to make PPE for our key workers. Stay safe x

Take care
Miss Dixon

Whole School – Self Isolation – Mr Hayton’s Nature Post – 27.4.2020

27th April 2020H Smith
Spring is springing and nature is loving it!
On Friday from Hebburn Helps carpark, Miss Riley and Mr Hayton watched a buzzard circling high over the town.
On his daily walks Mr Hayton has seen loads of migrant birds returning from faraway places like Africa such as swallows, house martins, and just today, terns.
Suddenly there are loads of butterflies including Peacocks, Specked Woods, Orange-tipped Whites and Small Tortoiseshells.
All around us nature is at its most vibrant as adults take in Spring’s bounty to feed their young.
Look up, look around and see what you can see when you look properly! How many different species can you spot now you have the time to look?…
