For worship this morning, year 1 have been looking at children’s rights linked to Agents of change. The children were very mature when discussing what children are entitled to and distinguishing between what is a right and what is a responsibility. This will be our focus for the Summer term and is linked to our topics school days and childhood.
In Science this afternoon, year 1 have been looking at the four main leaf parts and different types of leaf. They investigated leaves in class then we went outside to see if we could identify a simple, palmate, compound, lobed or needle-like leaf.
On Friday, year 1 continued orienteering in PE. The children used a map to guide themselves through an obstacle course, recognising the different symbols and words they needed to follow to complete the course successfully.
KS1 Spanish Club had the best time with Mr Rundle during their first session. They learned all about animals and consolidated their knowledge by playing some games of bingo!
Year 1 have been using concrete resources this morning to help understand tens and ones in place value to 50. The children worked amazingly as peer support, using the number cards to form a number then represent this using base 10. Year 1 teachers were super impressed that the children challenged themselves to represent numbers greater than 50, wowza!
Yesterday morning for collective worship year 1 focused on The fruits of the spirit. The children discussed what the fruits represent and then completed a self-reflection activity thinking about times they have felt joy, kindness, patience, love, gentleness and self-control.
On Wednesday Year 1 walked to Jarrow library in the gorgeous sunshine ☀️. The lovely Catherine read the children some stories then we explored the library and chose a new book to bring back to school.
Today year 1 have been focusing on William Shakespeare as a mover and shaker and what we can learn all about The Globe Theatre. The children completed a fact file all about William Shakespeare learning significant facts about his impact on history. As part of guided reading we completed a reading comprehension, recalling facts from the text. This afternoon we looked at The Globe Theatre. The children located this on a map of London using skills learnt in Geography. They then labelled the theatre and looked at plays that are performed there. To finish off a super day of learning the children then made their very own Globe Theatre.
At the end of last half term, Year 1 completed their “Striking and Fielding” unit with their first ever game of rounders. Children practised the skills they built up over the course of the unit, such as striking the ball with a racquet and applied this to the game. We had so much fun and the weather was on our side – for once!
