In history this afternoon year 1 have been continuing their topic, school days. The children sorted statements about what Victorian schools were like into true and false.
On the last Friday of the half term, Year 1 completed their orienteering unit. Children were asked to use a map of the school groups to locate tags. Children worked in pairs to find the the tags and record them. Children really enjoyed this activity and didn’t even realise they were doing work. Well done Year 1!
This morning, Year 1 learnt all about the famous archaeologist and egyptologist, Howard Carter. Howard Carter is our mover and shaker for History. Children wrote short digital biographies about his life, using their digital writing skills. This will also count as their computing gold task. Children then became mini archaeologists where they worked in pairs to dig up and make observations about different artefacts.
Today is National Numeracy Day and to celebrate this year 1 have been looking at money. The children explored coins by grouping and sorting in order. Miss Dixon then challenged the children to count in 2’s to 10. Finally, we discussed the tooth fairy and problem solving. We looked at if someone received 1 coin and someone received 3 coins who would have more or less depending on the coin amount.
Year 1 visited the Hancock Museum this morning ready to start their new topic in science, animal parts. When we arrived the children explored the museum then we took part in an animal classification workshop. This was a COOL task for the children learning all about mammals, reptiles, birds, fish etc and had the opportunity to take a close look at different animals.
Year 1 completed their science gold in plant parts this afternoon. The children went to the nature garden to draw a tree, wax rub a tree bark and collect a leaf to complete their tree identification booklet.
For this morning’s worship challenge, year 1 focused on can we always be joyful and how joy is different to happiness. We absolutely loved the children’s responses, there was a big emphasis on families and our school community bringing our children lots of joy to their lives.
For Picture News this morning year 1 had a discussion about what everyday items could be changed to help us. We linked this to our current topic of school days and our project as agents of change and looking at children’s rights. The children identified items that have changed over time and discussed how the change has helped us.
For worship this morning, year 1 have been looking at children’s rights linked to Agents of change. The children were very mature when discussing what children are entitled to and distinguishing between what is a right and what is a responsibility. This will be our focus for the Summer term and is linked to our topics school days and childhood.
In Science this afternoon, year 1 have been looking at the four main leaf parts and different types of leaf. They investigated leaves in class then we went outside to see if we could identify a simple, palmate, compound, lobed or needle-like leaf.
