In RE, Year 5 looked at a piece of artwork by Joseph Nuttkens called the ‘Explosion of Love’. We thought about what this picture showed us about the artists opinion on creation from both a Christian and scientific perspective.  We then thought about creating our own piece of expressive art to represent the belief that faith and science go together.

Year 5 had a fabulous ‘No pens day’ this week, centered all around their science topic, Earth and Space. Our classroom became the solar system for the day! We investigated day and night, using globes and torches to replicate the Earth orbiting the sun. Thinking about key vocabulary, we put together presentations to deliver during COOL afternoon to our parents and carers to showcase our learning and oracy skills.

Year 5 absolutely wowed staff this week with their fantastic class assembly all around their learning in their history topic, Dynamic Dynasties. Not only did they prepare their lines independently, they delivered them amazingly, thinking about all of the different elements of oracy. Staff were so incredibly proud of them all, well done Year 5 superstars! ️

Year 5 enjoyed their swimming session this week, working on breast stroke and back stroke.

Year 5 have been focusing on our 12 times table this week in guided maths. We have been completing garage sessions on TTRS solely focusing on multiplication and division by 12, along with completing our number wheels to help reinforce this.

Year 5 have really been getting to grips with improper fractions in maths this week. We have been using concrete resources to help us covert these to mixed numbers.

Year 5 explored Aristotles theory around the Earth being spherical this week in science. We looked at replicating his observations using a ball to represent the Earth, and observed what happened when a figure moved around.

Year 5 have been continuing with their Earth and Space topic by investigating how the planets orbit the sun. We made a model of the sun, Earth and the moon, and replicated how they orbit. We then used our models to determine which facts were true or false relating to this.

Year 5 kickstarted their new science topic, Earth and Space, with a visit to Twice Brewed Inn for a stargazing experience with Keilder Observatory.

Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side, which meant we couldn’t get outside to use the telescopes. However, the staff at Keilder Observatory delivered a fabulous workshop where we learned lots about the solar system, and even had a visit to the planetarium!
